Health System

"Malawi is a landlocked country with a population of 17 million. The delivery of the health care system is based on primary health care (PHC). (NCBI, 2018)" The Ministry of Health oversees most healthcare given. Public health care is free and organized into primary, secondary and tertiary. The hospitals are often rural and have a difficult time having adequate staffing and supplies.

Imagine being a patient at the above hospital. This is the grim reality for the patients at a hospital in Malawi. "Speaking after a tour by the Ministry of Health on Monday, Principal Administrator for the hospital, Frank Sinyiza, said there is a bed capacity of 350 patients but at the present the hospital accommodates about 450 patients, a situation that forces them to share beds. (The Maravi Post, 2019)"

A huge barrier to receiving health care is that it must be within walking distance for them to receive care. In our country even if you don't drive there is typically public transportation available.
